Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to sit down with MSNBC tonight for a two-hour discussion in what will be her first one-on-one interview with a major network since becoming the Democratic nominee,
Since the withdrawal of President Joe Biden from the race, and the subsequent nomination of his vice President, Harris has faced heavy criticism for her lack of interviews and press conferences.
Now 51 days into her candidacy, and with just 41 days until the presidential election, many voters feel they still do not know enough about the candidate to choose her over former President Donald Trump.
Tonight’s discussion, therefore, presents a critical opportunity for Harris to lay out her “New Way Forward” agenda for the American electorate.
The interview, which is being held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will air at 7 p.m. E.T., during a special, two-hour episode of All In with Chris Hayes.
The interview will be hosted and broadcast by MSNBC, and viewers will be able to watch the exchange through either cable or the network’s online streaming service.
Who is Interviewing Her?
Harris will sit down with Stephanie Ruhle, a long-time member of the MSNBC team and host of the nightly show The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle.
Ruhle has a wealth of experience with those either sitting in or running for the oval office, having interviewed both President Joe Biden in 2023 and former President Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign.
However, Ruhle has also been one of the few voices in the American media defending Harris’s apparent reluctance to engage with the press.
During her recent appearance on Real Time With Bill Maher, Ruhle argued that Harris could justifiably evade specific policy questions because “she’s not running for perfect, she’s running against Trump.”
She also said that Harris’s dual position as both VP and Democratic nominee puts her in a “tricky position.”
“it’s very difficult for anybody in her position to kind of thread this needle and say, ‘Here’s what we should do, here’s our plan’ when he’s the current commander in chief,” Ruhle said to Maher.
The interview will give Harris a chance to set out her agenda for the country, a much-needed opportunity given the way she is viewed by the U.S. electorate.
According to an early September poll from the New York Times and Siena College, 31 percent of registered voters said they “need to learn more” about Harris and her policies, compared to only 12 percent for Trump.
While the lack of knowledge about the vice president’s proposals does give Harris room to win voters’ confidence, a poor performance with Ruhle could spell disaster for the candidate.
The interview will likely focus on Harris’ economic agenda, and delve into the campaign’s promise to create an “Opportunity Economy.”
Her interviewer, Stephanie Ruhle, has previous experience working at Bloomberg, and her nightly show is largely economics-centric, giving an indication of the sort of topics that will be up for discussion.
Harris’s sit down also comes only a day after Trump travelled to Savannah, Georgia for an finance-focused campaign rally.
During the barnburner speech, the former president reiterated the threat of illegal immigrants “stealing” American jobs, promised to inaugurate a “manufacturing renaissance” if elected, and to slap substantial tariffs on foreign goods.
Harris has consistently fallen behind her opponent in opinion polls concerning inflation, jobs and the economy at large, and so her Wednesday evening appearance could prove a make-or-break opportunity for Harris to champion her “Opportunity Economy” agenda.
